How to Conjugate Present Tense in Korean

This lesson will teach you how to conjugate the present tense in Korean. All Korean verbs end in 다. Verbs usually are not used in this form and need to be conjugated. The 다 ending is dropped before conjugation.

You need to conjugate the verb based on Korean honorifics. Korean honorifics is a system in which speech changes based on the relationships between people speaking and who they are speaking about. People older than you or in a more senior position get the more honorific forms.
Remember to drop verb ending 다 before conjugation.

 

Informal Level ~아, ~어, ~여

1. If the last vowel in a verb stem is ㅏ or ㅗ add ~아.

찾다 = find, look for
찾다 – 다 = 찾 + 아 = 찾아

If a verb stem ends in a vowel then ~아 is combined with it.

가다 = go
가다 – 다 = 가 + 아 = 가

오다 = come
오다 – 다 = 오 + 아 = 와

 

2. If the last vowel in a verb stem is not ㅏ or ㅗ add ~어.

먹다 = eat
먹다 – 다 = 먹 + 어 = 먹어

If a verb stem ends in a vowel then ~어 is combined with it.

주다 = give
주다 – 다 = 주 + 어 = 줘

마시다 = drink
마시다 – 다 = 마시 + 어 = 마셔

켜다 = turn on
켜다 – 다 = 켜 + 어 = 켜

빼다 = remove, subtract
빼다 – 다 = 빼 + 어 = 빼

나서다 = leave, meddle in
나서다 – 다 = 나서 + 어 = 나서

 

3. If the verb ends in 하다 add ~여.

하다 = do
하다 – 다 = 하 + 여 = 해

공부하다 = study
공부하다 – 다 = 공부하 + 여 = 공부해

사랑하다 = love
사랑하다 – 다 = 사랑하 + 여 = 사랑해

If you remove  하다 from a  하다 verb you are left with a noun.
행복 = happiness
행복하다 = to be happy
This can be done with all  하다 verbs.

 

Polite Level ~아요, ~어요, ~여요

The polite level is made the same way as the informal level with one difference:
add ~요 to the end of the verbs.

1. If the last vowel in a verb stem is ㅏ or ㅗ add ~아요.

찾다 = find, look for
찾다 – 다 = 찾 + 아요 = 찾아요

If a verb stem ends in a vowel then ~아요 is combined with it.

가다 = go
가다 – 다 = 가 + 아요 = 가요

오다 = come
오다 – 다 = 오 + 아요 = 와요

2. If the last vowel in a verb stem is not ㅏ or ㅗ add ~어요.

3. If the verb ends in 하다 add ~여요.

Honorific Level ~ㅂ니다, ~습니다

1. If the verb stem ends in a vowel add ~ㅂ니다.

가다 = go
가다 -다 = 가 + ㅂ니다 = 갑니다

하다= do
하다 – 다 = 하 + ㅂ니다 = 합니다

2. If the verb stem ends in a vowel add ~습니다.

찾다 = find, look for
찾다 – 다 = 찾 + 습니다 = 찾습니다

먹다 = eat
먹다 – 다 = 먹 + 습니다 = 먹습니다
