How to Conjugate Future Tense in Korean

This lesson will teach you how to conjugate the future tense in Korean in the most common way.
All Korean verbs end in 다. Verbs usually are not used in this form and need to be conjugated. The 다 ending is dropped before conjugation.

You need to conjugate the verb based on Korean honorifics. Korean honorifics is a system in which speech changes based on the relationships between people speaking and who they are speaking about. People older than you or in a more senior position get the more honorific forms.
Remember to drop verb ending 다 before conjugation.

Informal Level ~ㄹ/을 거야

1. If the last letter in a verb stem is a vowel add ~ㄹ 거야.

가다 = go
가다 – 다 = 가 + ㄹ 거야 = 갈 거야
나는 집에 갈 거야. = I will go home.

오다 = come
오다 – 다 = 오 + ㄹ 거야 = 올 거야
나는 학교에 올 거야. = I will come to school.

공부하다 = study
공부하다 – 다 = 공부하 + ㄹ 거야 = 공부할 거야
나는 한국어를 공부할 거야. = I will study Korean.

2. If the last letter in a verb stem is a consonant add ~을 거야.

찾다 = find, look for
찾다 – 다 = 찾 + 을 거야 = 찾을 거야
나는 열쇠를 찾을 거야. = I will find the keys.

먹다 = eat
먹다 – 다 = 먹 + 을 거야 = 먹을 거야
나는 김치를 먹을 거야. = I will eat kimchi.

잡다 = hold, catch
잡다 – 다 = 잡 + 을 거야 = 잡을 거야
나는 공을 잡을 거야. = I will catch the ball.

1. If the last letter in a verb stem is a vowel add ~ㄹ 거예요.

가다 = go
가다 – 다 = 가 + ㄹ 거예요 = 갈 거예요
나는 집에 갈 거예요. = I will go home.

오다 = come
